Message from the Deputy First Minister
“I am absolutely delighted that Irfan is now a member of the SNP. I have known him for a few years now and our paths have crossed a great deal in our respective roles as MSP for Glasgow Southside and Councillor for Pollokshields. It is because I have seen him work at such close quarters that I know what a popular and effective local Councillor he is. He works really hard, fights his constituents’ corner on a range of different issues and has a real rapport with those he represents, particularly young people. It wasn’t easy having someone of such capability on the other side of the political divide. It’s another reason why I’m pleased to have him in the SNP. Irfan was, in my view, badly treated by the Labour Party but I have no doubt that their loss is the SNP’s gain. I know he thought long and hard about joining and made the decision only when he knew beyond any doubt that he wanted to campaign for the SNP in the council elections and for an independent Scotland. Although he is not a candidate himself at these elections, Irfan is already working hard on behalf of other SNP candidates which I think is a measure of his commitment and sincerity. Irfan is someone of great integrity. He believes in a fair, socially just and independent Scotland and is determined to stand up for his principles. I look forward to working with him for many years to come and I have no doubt we have not seen the last of Irfan in an elected capacity. Not only do I count him as a valued colleague, I am also proud to call him a friend.” Nicola Sturgeon
